Photography Composition

Simplicity
I chose this picture for simplicity because the background of the photo is monotone and plain, which makes the flag and what looks like a firetruck ladder stand out more in the picture. Also, the way the flag is still standing is powerful because it shows that even though we had just faced a huge tragedy, we are still standing.

Rule of Thirds
I chose this photo for rule of thirds because the man is standing in the corner of the photo and is not on center. This is effective because his arm extends to the center of the photo with a sign, which draws more attention to the sign.

Lines
This picture shows lines because the vertical lines on the building draw your eye up towards the explosion. This is important because the crash is what the photographer wants you to focus on, not the building's structure.

Balance
This picture shows balance because the man on the left balances out with the tall building on the right. This is effective in the photo because it makes it more appealing to the eye and also makes the building stand out more without being too distracting.

Framing
This picture shows framing because the two buildings close in around the man in the blue shirt. He also stands out because he is wearing a bright color, so it makes it easier to focus on him and what he is doing (which is escaping).

Avoiding Mergers
This picture shows mergers because there are people sticking out of everywhere. There are too many people in the photo to avoid a merger, which is kind of effective in this situation because it resembles all of the chaos which is going on.

Repetition
This picture shows repetition because the lines on the building repeat over and over again. This helps the picture because it provides a basic background to make the subject, the falling man, stand out more.

Viewpoint
This picture shows viewpoint because the photographer shows the people walking toward him in almost straight lines. This is effective because it shows how the photographer is running toward the problem, not away like the rest of the crowd.

Create Depth
This picture shows depth because it is an overview of the city. This is effective because it makes the city look large and expansive. The only problem with this photo is the quality, which I think is just because of the website.

Cropping
I chose this picture because the photographer cropped the image to create rule of thirds with the shoe tree. This is cool for the picture because I believe that those are some of the found shoes of the firefighters that did't return from the building, and there is a crowd of firefighters behind them. This clues in to the subject of the shoes and makes the picture more understandable.
